Give me Randy Merrill with 3 plug ins over almost anyone else with all of the analog gear in the world.
For context I work in a studio with an incredible custom analog chain, and master digitally almost all of the time.
Hey Ruairi.
Thanks for stopping by the thread.
Interesting perspective here.
I also have 15 years engineering experience myself.
I had learned mastering in the box and also via hardware.
I agree tho.
I was able to create some amazing masters that compete and are loud dynamic just with plugins.
Maybe it was the engineer who mastered it that was lacking in this situation?
I guess the reason why I feel that way is because every time I run any source of audio through my analog gear.
It just always sounds better to me.
(must be used in proper context of course)
But for Example..
My vocals always sound better going through an optical compressor, or for example an Avalon 737. Neve Channel Strip.
Apollo > Directly to the Neumann just never sounds nearly as good as Apollo > Analog Channel Strip of Choice > Neumann.
In context of this case.
Weβre discussing mastering here which is a totally different intention altogether then example I gave you.
But still. I feel whenever I send a mix through an analog compressor or Channel Strip. It just sounds better?
Maybe Im wrong.
If you have recommendations for a Pro Mastering Engineer?
Would love to check them out.
Best,
Ghost Artist.
