Seems like all the questions have been asked, except this one. (As far as I have read) Are there any higher end gear, pres, mics,comps,lims, EQ's, that have just stunk to the trolls, especially given the cost?? Lets say cost per "thing" is 800 bux and up...to... more $$$$$$$$

AKG 414. I used to like them and used them every day but using one now is very unsatisfying.

Almost everything newer than 50's tube gear annoys me.

Put the tlm 103 on djembe / hand drum / toms ( especially floor )

R84. That said, I bet the TLM 103 would make a good mic for a rapper. It's got presence up the wazooo.

I bought into all the Hype on this for once. It had a dull sounding top end and the transient response was not up to par. Although it did sound decent on slow melodic instruments, organ, sax etc..
The piano was where it really showed its weakness. Solo acoustic Martin was not very pleasing at all. Again the plucking transients were weak.

Jim williams mod is supposed to help with these weaknesses from what I read here.

Ok, hate almost every "new" neumann (agreed that sennheiser did wrong thing with that company). Toooo much overpriced and overhyped, but sonically they are so so.

Let me start by saying, if you are disappointed with your Gama, I'm sure that we can make arrangements with Vintage King to get you into something else, with no hassels. We want you to be completely satisfied. I've just got to add, that the Gama is not an api clone, imitation, or knock off of any kind. It's not a tube mic pre, maybe that is what you were expecting. Both the API and the Gama are discrete mic pres, as are Helios, Neve, Quad Eight, and Calrec. Our mic pres have three switchable output transformer modes, one of them being transformerless. It is designed from scratch, made with our custom opamps and custom wound transformers.

I think the first six months of TLM 103 production mics were great, the last two years sound harsh in comparison. Anyone know if they were tooled differently or outsourced to a third world country?

Henry, any idea if the 67's you worked with were in good condition, or recently checked/tuned? When they're right, they are stunning. When they are in mediocre condition, they're only a doorstop. Sorry you have only found doorstops!

Re 67 - That's what I've heard. I believe one of them had recently been worked on. But I can't tell what. Each time there was a mid range honk I found uncomfortable.
