ADAM Audio A7V

In short

  • Rotatable X-ART ribbon tweeter
  • 7-inch woofer
  • 40 Hz - 45 kHz frequency response
  • 105dB max SPL at 1m
  • Excellent sound quality and stereo imaging
  • On-board DSP-based room correction options including partnership with Sonarworks
  • Still competitively priced considering what's on offer

Since their introduction in 1999 the Berlin-based ADAM Audio have gained quite the following. Their monitors can be found in many home studios and professional facilities alike. To most of us here it’d be no surprise to also find them listed in any ‘best monitors’ recommendation list on the internet. They really need no introduction.

The A7V’s are part of the new A Series range and are the successor to the multi-award-winning A7X monitors. Priced at $1600 a pair, they are a 2-way active monitor that feature a 7” ‘multi-layer mineral’ woofer and an X-ART tweeter that is handmade in Berlin, Germany. With a familiar looking design the dual-ported cabinets now have somewhat of a refined look to them. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that they look like a cross between the A7X’s and the S2V’s. Gone are both the glossy glass fibre woofers and the front mounted power/volume controls. These and all other controls can now be found on the back of the units.

Rather handily all of the monitors in the new A Series range allow for their waveguide and tweeter modules to be rotated by 90 or even 180 degrees. With certain user setups the sound may improve by placing them on their side as doing so could help reduce desk reflection and comb filtering. So having this option may be beneficial to some.

To my eyes the A7V’s look sleek & stylish and I'm happy to report that they don't have any visually distracting characteristics to them, such as overly bright LEDs or the likes. Seeing as monitors are a piece of gear that you will be sitting in front of daily (and often nightly) I think this is something always worth looking out for. At the base of the unit you will find four M8 threaded mounting holes. As it happens, ADAM also plans to have a range of suitable mounting options available soon.

Taking a look around the back reveals Room Adaptation buttons, volume knob, a voicing button and input select buttons that switches between the balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs. The Room Adaptation buttons (Bass, Desk, Presence, Treble) allow for basic compensation of bass build up, desk reflections, the mids and highs. The voicing button toggles between Pure and UNR (Uniform Natural Response) tunings. Pure is a more neutral response and UNR offers a response curve similar to the A7X. More on the EXT option in a moment.

Rather handily these DSP based features can be controlled remotely over ethernet using the ADAM A Control application. This of course can save you from having to get up and manually change settings one monitor at a time. To get started you first connect both the speakers and your PC or Mac to a network switch or WiFi router. Aside from controlling the settings found on the back you also have access to an Advanced mode. With this you can fine tune the A7V’s using 6 bands of equalisation. Frequency, Gain, Q and Filter Type can be changed on each band.

Another string to the A7V’s bow comes thanks to ADAM Audio's partnership with Sonarworks. By using Sonarworks SoundID Reference software and a measurement mic (both available separately) you can create and export a calibration profile specifically for your room. Once you have run through the calibration process in SoundID Reference you can export your room's profile. At this point it's worth mentioning that for best results ADAM recommends using the No Boost 0dB export option. Now you simply upload this file to run directly on the A7V’s DSP back in the A Control application.

The benefit of doing this is that no room correction software is then required to run on your computer, neither in your DAW or system wide, as the monitor's would be taking care of the correction on board. At this time you are also free to disconnect the ethernet cables if you so choose. When either Advanced mode or SoundID Reference mode are in use you will notice the EXT light activated on the back of the monitors. You can now toggle between Pure, UNR and whichever of these two modes you had activated directly on the units or in the A Control application, if of course you kept the ethernet cables connected.

Given the fact that many home studios have less than ideal acoustic treatment (even when they think they do) it's wonderful to have this ability. Rather generously, ADAM Audio customers get an extended 60 day trial of SoundID Reference and according to ADAM during the trial you have full functionality of the software, including the ability to export as many calibration profiles as you like. After the trial period expires, you will still have access to the exported profiles (as they are saved locally) and they will remain on the loudspeaker’s DSP. However once you relaunch the A Control application they will be removed. Now bear in mind that any significant changes to your environment, e.g new furniture/soundproofing/changes to the direction or location of your monitors, will require a new profile anyway so just do yourself a favour and purchase a licence, you won't regret it in my opinion.

All in all I am very impressed with the A7V’s. ADAM have built on the success of the A7X and made a monitor that looks and sounds great. They are competitively priced and having the option of running Sonarworks SoundID Reference calibration profiles directly on the monitor's DSP is absolutely fantastic. This is on-board room correction as it should be. Of course the proof of the pudding is in the eating so testing them out for yourself, preferably in your own room, is the only true way of determining their value to you. All things considered, the ADAM Audio A7V’s are an excellent choice of monitor and for what it’s worth I am pleased to say that they have easily found a place on my ‘highly recommended’ list.

ADAM Audio A7V

Hearing every layer in the music is new to me, as this is my first set of true studio monitors. With the onboard DSP and Ethernet, the A7V's are adjustable from my computer to accommodate different listening goals. They work great for audiophile listening, as well as mixing, mastering, and occasional forensic use. Albums mastered on high quality gear come alive on these, especially the latest releases from major labels. They also helpfully reveal gaps needing correction in independent releases, such as excessive low end. Great value for the money. My expectations were exceeded.
