Linear or lateral production

Do you seperate production and mixing and if not, is the process always forward moving , or do you sometimes have to take backward steps in order to move a production to the finish line.

the first thing I do is mixing, ill mix the main key elements first then turn it into a track. for me, it's all about the sound and the production so i won't start making a track until I know the sound or the mix is strange enough and still bangs.
