Hello all,

I am building a 4-room music studio for rehearsal, tracking and mixing.

I’ve been following this forum for a long time, spent a lot of time with my nose in the common reference books, and finally started construction a few months ago. Figured it was past time to start a build thread.

The total space is 33 ft x 33 ft (1089 sq ft), with a single load-bearing wall dividing the space roughly in half. The ceiling slopes from 10ft high in the rear of the building to 16ft in the front.

I’ll post a few photos to show the progress so far. Will followup with more details in the days and weeks to come. And of course I will have a lot of questions!

Here is a floor plan.
Main entrance is at upper left. Load-in and fire exit on the right.

What looks like a triple wall in the center is the bearing wall in the middle (framed 2x6 only, no drywall). Room within room construction on either side of it makes it look like 3 walls, but it will be only a wide 2-leaf.

Entrance vestibule. Electric service entrance and panel access is inside this tiny room. Not a true soundlock because it is too small to close the first door behind you before opening the second door. But I don't expect a lot of traffic in and out.

I imagine I could stick an amp in here and use it for an extra pseudo-Iso booth if needed.

The residential interior door in the photo will be replaced.

Hi Progger! I see from your profile that you are a saxophonist. So am I! I’m out east, between Elgin and Bastrop.

That's a great area to buy and build in at the moment, no doubt about it. Close enough to town but actually achievable without being wealthy! Good for you, I hope this goes well, and that you get a solid client base too. Ultimately, that's the only "gear" a studio needs...

I'm honestly a multi-instrumentalist, and I make most of my living as a pianist/keyboardist and arranger, but I do still play quite a bit of saxophone and have in the past been moderately "jazz famous" on that instrument, I guess you could say. Largely due to having played with Snarky Puppy and associated groups, plus my own fusion group. My obsession with recorded saxophone/woodwind sound is what led me to Gears(lutz)(pace) years ago, though, and the obsession continues! If you ever want to geek out about recording chains for that instrument specifically, gimme a shout.
