It's not a multi-band. It's a broad-band spectral compressor. All multi-band compressors, including those with thousands of bands, offer phase and crossover issues.

The true spectral broadband processing has none of those issues, which we deployed in M-Compressor.

Sounds great and the interface is very intuitive, as usual.

I only wish the sidechain would go higher (at least 150Hz).

What is the latency? Never use the Sonible Smart Comp because of the crazy latency.

This plugin seems crazy! Honestly this is a very well thought out modern compressor!

The closest I can think of is Sonic Anomaly's Vola.
But M-comp seems to have more controls which would be very useful for vocal and bass.

The mid-side is not available in this version, but we will probably add it in the future updates.

bummer, sounds like it's not usable for tracking then. will still take a look for use when mixing etc

. Would it be correct to say that your M series plugins all share the idea of processing in the frequency domain (and thus introduce latency and are not ideal for recording)? Or is that just a coincidence for M-Clarity, M-Deesser, and M-Compressor?

Yes, it would be about M-Clarity, M-De-Esser, and M-Compressor, as the M-Loudener is more suitable for recording.

Ah man, I am a sucker for anything "spectral compressor", as my DSM obsession will evidence, especially if it does sidechain unlike the Auburn offering. Will def give this a go. Looks nice.

This seems to be similar in concept to Pro Audio's Dynamic Spectrum Mapper (DSM) from Paul Frindle.

It is! Very! It's like an updated GUI version of the DSM, but without the essential capture/curve feature and parametric shaping.. It's good! Seems to have more latency though. i'd love to see an updated DSM with the display, Sidechain LPF, and Tilt of this one.
I haven't quite finished exploring it, and the upwards compression bit.
But it's on the purchase radar for sure.

Ok so the upwards compression gives it the OTT vibe, and very nice it is too. Atm on the master I set it to compress up, and with a slight tilt to bring out those hi details, followed with the DSM doing it's wonderful curve limiting thing, and it's a pretty rad combo.

Nice GUI. Looks like a bit of a mashup of DSM (but with the option of up/down comp simultaneously) and Sculpt (without the additional bells and whistles). Will have to throw SmartComp2 in the test drive for good measure but I'm looking forward to hearing how this stands up and probably more importantly how fast it can be utilized.

Edit: One thing that stands out to me right away is the lack of an emphasis/deemphasis to go along with the tilt...unless I'm missing something?).

I dunno, this seems to me like a lot of tech that should have gone into the other comps instead maybe. You guys often seem to make the same plugs over and over, rather than improve what you've already made. *shrug

Software companies need to make a living, so they need revenues to keep coming in. Only a few options really...

1. Subscriptions (we all hate that right?)

2. Make new plugins every time you come up with some new code or improvement

3. Charge for an update to V2, V3, V4 and so on

pick your poison they all lead to the same end result

The quality is unquestionable, the UI is great. But why is TiltEQ the only internal SideChain?
I always get excited about Techivation plugins and then I feel like the functionality has been dared to be cut.
With a parametric SideChainEQ, it would be the closest thing to a perfect spectral compressor right now.

The Tilt feature in M-Compressor is not an EQ that is applied to the sidechain. The Tilt feature allows you to affect the shape of the spectral thresholds and tilt them around a Centre frequency. So it is applied to the thresholds, not the signal itself. Tilting the thresholds allows you to apply more compression to a part of the spectrum, while compressing the rest less.

Thanks for the technical explanation!　My perception, however, is much the same. My point is that I want to change the shape of that spectral threshold to look like SCEQ.

When I want to process a certain band more strongly, or conversely reduce processing to a certain band, Tilt alone does not allow for fine tuning. I can understand the advantages of the current broad settings, but by not being able to make the slightest adjustment, M-Compressor is taken out of the chain. Otherwise, it is perfect.

I see some comparisons to DSM which is exactly what came to mind when I first tried M-Comp. However, for me, DSM is a nightmare to set up and can get ugly really quick. I find that even without the “Capture” feature I can accomplish similar tasks I use DSM for much faster with M-Comp without the “ugly” and am very pleased with the results. This and MDWDRC2, and Acustica Ocean have really blown me away when it comes to compression.

it is a nice compressor, just dont see why we need
15 different ones. Emulations i can see i guess, still
its nice when they are all in one. Anyway, whatever.

I tend to prefer when a company makes something
and keeps improving it over time. Upgrade costs are
understandable of course. But so far i have to sort
through a fair no of these techivation plugins, which
almost all look similar, and a few of them infact do
pretty much the same thing. *shrug
