Sorry but this sub-forum looks pretty dead. I am looking for a forum where I can make music theory related questions, post music and get help to transcribe it, or where I can help others with as little as I know... Any suggestions? thx!

Feel free to post questions here! I'd love it if this one became a bit more active, but I understand most people come to Gearspace because of... gear.

A good source for things like that is vi-control.net – it's largely focused on film scoring and the use of virtual instruments in that line of work, but there are lots of knowledgeable musicians and composers there and plenty of theory geeks.

A newer forum by the same folks is songwriterandproducer.net which is built on a similar platform. It just started, so it's not as active as VIC, but still some good folks there.

I would love GS to get going with this subforum but no time to wait. The fact that the other one is less focus on gear is an advantage imo.

I hear all that, for sure. GS is a wonderful resource for recording, mixing, overall production, and things of that nature, and I've learned a ton here over the years... I was already a seasoned full-time musician before I made an account here, so I was already experienced with theory, composing/arranging, and performing professionally on several instruments. I was utterly ignorant of the technical aspects of recording and production, though, and some fine folks here have been a treasure trove of information.

VI-Control and Mike's new forum (that you signed up for!) will be a lot heavier on the actual music side of things, I think, but I'm hoping this subforum catches on a bit, too. It's still quite new, and not what people always think to come to GS for.

Hey thanks for that link to songwriterandproducer.net. I was dipping in and out of VI control forums and read that they were considering starting a site like that. So glad they did!

I just joined up over there, but still hoping that GS will get some traction eventually with our music theory forum here.

I'll be frank though, I was, and am, bummed that there was not one incremental iota of productive interaction on the rhythm and hypermeasures thread I started. Instead it was just a post expressing ignorance that such a thing could even be (?!).

It just seems so odd that not one single person was interested in how that meta structure of rhythm impacts music.

I'll speak immodestly for a moment... I included a great description and good resources. Crickets, radio silence.

Especially since rhythm is such an intricate part of today's music, more so than modes and doodads like that, I thought I could get some insights. Oh well, I tried. /Gripe

I can certainly sympathize with your frustration... I'm an adjunct composition professor at a local college, which is a very cool part-time gig (I make the vast majority of my living as a keyboardist/saxophonist and composer/arranger), and I get to work with some very cool students. But I've noticed more and more as time goes on that younger people getting into music these days are much more interested in sound design ("production") than they are the actual elements of music itself (melody, harmony, rhythm).

I'm surprised at how much time I have to spend, even with reasonably talented students, getting them to transcribe relatively straightforward melodies and bass lines accurately.
