How fast would that 128gb run ?
If they have identical connectivity go with the cheaper option.
I use an AMD 7600 on my daw. It works fine and has 4 outs. The GPU does add additional fans in it, so that might be a factor if this needs to be dead silent.
It is apparent I do not know how to use the 'multi-quote' option .... apologies.
Hi Kyle,
It was a brief talk on RAM ... He was saying that using 64g @ 6400 may not be as 'efficient' or better than having 128g at a slower clock speed. Not sure what slower, acceptable is at this point.
An article I just looked up states something similar:
Quote:
Faster RAM is better, but not vital
To stress the point, it’s always better to have faster components – if you can afford it. But RAM speed is less important for most people than CPU, GPU, and storage performance, and again, it’s better to have more RAM than faster RAM. If you’re looking to upgrade your PC to make it faster, then spending your money on extra RAM modules, a faster CPU, more powerful GPU, or an SSD instead of an HDD, will give you more bang for your buck.
I guess all things to consider ...
Also ... I do wonder if how the RAM is populated, and its' impact. [I know Matched is the only way I'll go].
If the Motherboard has 4 RAM slots ... is it best to use 2 - 64g cards ... or 4 32g cards. I'm sure someone knows ... so I'll wait to learn on that.
As for Motherboards ... Between the Tomahawk and the ACE. The ACE has 6 SATA's, while the TH has only 4.
Is there any restriction on the ACE if using M2 drives ? I think I had that with my current board ... so maybe something similar. I could use more SATA's for all the drives. The spinners just offer much more storage for the price, compared to the speed of Solid State. But for my work, the spinners have never been a restriction issue.
[having an Samsung M2 for the Boot Drive was an amazing improvement. Before, I dreaded Re-boots, cause they'd take, like, eternity. Now ... 30 secs or so
To that, He suggests the Samsung 9100Pro 4T. I'm sure I'll be happy with that in the longer run ... as apposed to the wallet ... and doing standard installs all want to play on the C drive ... fine.
Back to the SATA's ... I'm still learning if Thunderbolt might provide the solution path ... maybe even a external box ... i just don't know ...
For the GPU ... it seems suggested that ON-board GPU is no longer an audio issue ... Interrupt ... Latency, etc.
If it is ... I'll pull the GeForce GTX 1650 for the new build ... although ... plugins like GENESIS are developing for GPU powered version ... interesting. I'd probably need a better Vid card ... but that could be, some, $400+
My question would be ... can the new Ultra9 285k handle everything I need ??? I won't know till I fire up a heavy session on it ... I'm left to wonder at this time.
Once all is decided, it looks like I'll HAVE to 'upgrade' to Windows 11 [Pro? ... probably]. Man ... just got over Win-7 ... was starting to like/accept Win-10 ... now a new OS. Is the newer REALLY better .... hmmmm ... i've found that to not always be the case ... but then ... is there really a choice in the days ahead. Bite the damn bullet, and hope I can get it configured in a good way.
My Tech Guy did make life much easier doing my 7 to 10 upgrade ... transferring ALL my 7 Programs and plugins. All but one Program [not that important] worked ... saving my months of installations .... yeah.
Says he'll do the same for 10 to 11. [hopefully with similar success].
Sorry for the long post ... I'm thinking/typing my way into solidify what I need to do ... regardless of the unknowns and questions.
You Guys have been very helpful .... and it is much appreciated. The couple computer buds/nerds are no longer around, or moved out of state ... so now, I'm your PITA
Thanks Guys !
I'm putting together my shopping list ... will post when I've narrowed down the few scragglers ... maybe give a last 'look over' before I purchase ... then hit the Blood Bank to help pay for whatever this may cost
