Elektron Digitone II: New Machines, More Tracks, More Polyphony

First question that comes to my mind: will this get a Keys model like the OG did? And if so, will it get a higher key count and a more sane layout?

If so, they should make it like the Analog Keys design, but with longer keybed, but I imagine they would just stick to the old formula to keep it all looking the same.

I just watched the official product release on youtube. I can't say I am inspired.
Didn't hear anything that made me go "wow", just understated bleeps and boops... that said I don't have a digitone (I), so the incremental improvements likely mean less to me.

It's an incredible synth / system brain, made multiples better in v2. Nothing else sounds like it in my experience - though it's clearly not for everyone. Also, with 16 total tracks allocatable to FM or MIDI, it can easily drive a whole song of other hardware and even software synths.

I'll absolutely sell my v1 to get v2 sometime next year after some bug release updates etc.

Here's a v1 example (not mine) of a side you don't usually hear in demos, for example. It's a very versatile synth, and v2 is vastly expand what it can do.

I have a Digitakt II so I think I have a good undestanding of what the UI will be like (and currently an AR MKII & A4 MKII).

From what I heard in the product release I cant see me choosing the Digitone II over something like phase plant on the strength of the audio demonstrated.

Happy to be proven wrong or have my mind changed. I just haven't heard the evidence for it yet.

edit: yes Gennie or Gennine from dissident witchcraft? (I recognise the gloves) gets after it harder than most on YouTube. Her work and a couple of others almost tipped me to purchase a OG Digitone.

No problem. I don't see a need for a sampler when I use a DAW and have 10s of thousands of samples on hand, so can't see myself ever getting one, so I understand where you're coming from.

As someone with an Elektron, you should at least be happy to see them release more/updated synths, I'd imagine.

The improvements over the OG are substantial, and it’s one of the best FM-based groovebox options on the market. But yeah, just as a straight ahead FM polysynth, I think there’s more interesting options out there/on the horizon.

Groovy. Big fan of the Digitone. If there was ever a device that had an "Instabuy" label for me it would be the Digitone II, so yes I instabought it.

I went direct to elektron and read about it.
I shall strongly consider obtain during 20% off sale later. The original digitone is still an amazing machine, and i look forward to getting the sequence features there or most of them anyway.
This is a nice machine though, and worth it for sure at $799. U will need some outboard after but hey that’s what’s up.

It looks and sounds very cool, but can it do anything that I can't do in Renoise with some plugins like Charlatan? The per-voice bitcrushing and sample rate reduction sound intriguing.

That seems like a personal question you'll have to discover. There's tons of Digitone content out there to watch/listen to. Digitone II just adds more of everything.

Same reason I don't have a hardware sampler - for me, there was nothing offered I needed/wanted enough to have dedicated hardware in my limited space. I have 4 hardware synths, and the Digitone is the only digital one I have.

Having checked out the previews, etc... Really liking:

-Wavetone synth engine
-comb filters
-ability to save kits
-page loop, for remixing patterns
-pattern transpose, with ability to filter OUT tracks (so they don't transpose)
-prepare mutes, nice little performance tool
-master compressor, something the first Digitone is lacking, with sidechain!
-extra LFO, always useful
-the NOT A:B trig conditions, greatly expands the A:B trig conditions
-full note edit page

One downer, Loopop video says sound presets aren't sorted by machine, it's just one long list.... Seems like they could maybe add a filter to remedy that.

Probably not. But the elektron workflow is oh so fast, flexible and fun once you grok it (not sure if you have used them before)

And it has a real analog output and overdrive, which you don't get in software.

Forgot to mention the track layering: Use one track to control other tracks as well, which means you can easily layer the different synth engines.

Overall this feels like a significant step above the Digitone... Double the voices and double the tracks (with more track flexibility), and the new synths engines and new sequencing and pattern palyback, etc. Good stuff!

So funny, I've been lusting for an OG Digitone for a few months, but I also knew this Digitone II was coming. Didn't take a PhD to figure this out after the Digitakt II showed up. They really outdid themselves this time. This thing looks and sounds awesome. But weirdly enough, it also makes me want to wait longer, because in a way, the OG Digitone might still be all I need... and used prices could go even lower after this release. Even if they're pretty low as it is.

I also kinda want to see what people do with these new features first. I don't necessarily crave the extra engines... for now. Elektron FM drum sounds are great, but not really my vibe to start with. So, for me, the OG FM synth and OG sequencer remain the selling point... for now. But 16 flexible tracks instead of 4+4 OG tracks is definitely a plus. Love to hear an in-depth demo of the extra filters... It's gonna be a tough one considering my budget is fairly limited. A $400 OG Digitone or a $900 brand new Digitone II... yet another GAD aka Gear Acquisition Dilemma. One question for the elektronauts out there... never been able to figure it out... can the OG Digitone MIDI tracks now send the arpeggiator out (since a recent or not so recent update perhaps)? Or not? I assume this new Digitone II can obviously.
