But perhaps one reason why nobody else has replied to this thread is because you're not being very specific. What genres do you mainly work in? I have a pretty good idea who I'd go to if I wanted indie rock mastered, who I'd go for for a big loud pop sound, who I'd go to for transparent audiophile classical, who I'd go to for metal, for EDM etc etc
Make a list of songs that you think sound awesome and find out who they're mastered by. If you're pretty happy with your own mastering already, then it should be easy: who sounds better than you?
I've always chosen mastering engineers based on two criteria:
1. I love the sound of the albums they've mastered
2. I can afford them
Thanks for the reply.
I work in different genres, e.g. rock, progressive, pop, r&b/soul, dance, smooth jazz, and others. But the release I'm referencing for this post is dance, r&b/soul.
I guess I just wanted a starting point of the most popular. Then I would spend time listening to their work before considering. I haven't been up on the big hitters lately, but I really liked Bob Ludwig's work overall back in the day. So, someone like him in modern times. Like most people, I want it all with the least compromise.
