Just curious..

I have a trs patch cable that makes the signal lower by a few db.

It dont seems broken any ware.
I´m pretty sure that´s the cable.

! This is not a problem to solve, It works with another cable, just curious !

Can a cable do that and were is the fault In It?

check for continuity Tip to Tip, Ring to Ring, and sleeve to sleeve.

An open ring might cause a 6dB loss in some situations.

I was scratching my head on this one but I'll bet you, John, must be right. I might suppose this kind of like shorting one side of a balanced input with an unbalanced cable/connector to get a gain loss of 6dB?

Are you sure both the input and output are TRS? If you use a TRS cable to plug a differentially-driven TRS output into a TS single-ended input, you will get 6dB loss.

As I mentioned, there´s no problem to solve. It just started working with another cable, exactly the same sort/brand.

I opened It but couldn´t see anything wrong with It.

Its TRS both end but I could check It with cable tester.

An "Open Ring" means the wire connecting the ring on one end is somehow not connected the the ring on the other end (as it's intended to be).

"TRS" stands for Tip, Ring, Sleeve. These are the connectors on the ends of the cable usually 1/4 inch in diameter (but can be other sizes).

For balanced cables the tip and ring connect to the signal wires + and - and the sleeve is the ground.

To test with an ohm meter, read between one cable end and the other for each T, R ands S, They should all read Zero (or very close to zero). Additionally, check each T, R and S to the other contacts not of the same name to verify they are not shorted to each other i.e. check the Tip on one end to the Ring on the other end; it should read infinite (no connection), then read the same Tip to the Sleeve on the other end, it should also read infinite. Do this with the other combinations. This is to make sure there are no shorts between the T,R, and S. If you have a cable tester, it will indicate all of the above at once but it's a good idea to understand what it's telling you.

In your case Karlj, I can understand that the loss of a few dB is not the end of the world...but I guess I'm kinda fussy so if there's something that's not working as expected, I usually want to know what's going on and I'll usually try to correct it if possible.

But...if JR is correct that the ring is open (which I have to believe he is, correct, that is) you not only have a cable that delivers 6dB less signal but you now have a cable that used to be balanced but now, with the loss of the "ring" side of the signal, you are left with an un-balanced cable disguised as a balanced one. This is only a potential problem if this cable ever ends up being used where the CMRR of a balanced cable is required.

Yes, Its only because Its interesting to know what´s going on.

I have check the cable with Cable tester and multimeter.
Dont show anything wrong.

But when I twist It a little when Its connected to the patch I can make It come and go, Of three cables of the same sort this one is the only one that does this.
And In two different patch points.
But It could be in the patch, but weird Its only this one doing It.

I might see if I can make It come and go by connecting It to something else but that will be part two I guess.. Now I have to work..
