They're also useful for doing transcription work on airplanes... Remarkably good isolation!
EDIT: I should mention – I think the KZs are great for in-ear monitors, which I would never recommend for mixing or mastering. In-ears are for the stage. There are so many better solutions from producing a record.
I started using my 1st proper IEM - a cheap Sony product about $10 if converted. I paid £10 in the UK for it, and I am quite impressed with the bass. Had to boost the top end with EQ, and after this, sounded fabulous. And excellent isolation, as you have mentioned.
Any suggestions of specific Kz's in the current market. As suggested by a contributor on this thread, I'm considering the Linsoul Kz ZS10 Pro 2.
Yes from a consistency point of view - i.e this is fundamentally about having an ideal distance between the drivers and our ears, over the ear headphones and speakers are more predictable, in that regard. any small movement in an IEM, and the sound changes.
I have had the same issue though with my AKG K702 headphones where moving them forward or backward in positioning round the ear, changes the frequency response and it's not easy to place them in the same position.
Strangely I find the IEM more consistent in tone, once the eartips are well sealed in the ear cannal.
Pretty strange to hear one's own heartbeat, through the blood vessels in my ears, when the IEM is well sealed, hoping I'm not the only one with this observation.
What's annoying is things like chewing gum or sweets or any kind of eating which is amplified through the skull and sounds so much louder than when heard through the air - my thinking is the lower thud frequencies get transmitted, while the higher frequencies are absorbed so without the higher frequencies transmitted from mouth to ear by ear, any mouth noises are strange. Thud Thud Thud, but this is a good sign of excellent sealing of IEM and ear, when his seal attenuates the high frequencies reaching the ear, from the outside.
