Been playing around with the three for hours listening and adjusting trying to see which sounds better..

• I DO NOT have a tuned room
• Listening through Mackies 624
• Appogee Symphony Desktop

Some observations not in any particular order…

Weiss is clean clean clean really nice for that sound

Weiss - Katz Parallel Compression is very nice

Ozone seemed overall to be the best and translate well to other systems

Ozone learn feature was very very good for starting point - tweaking digital or analog eq and then - for me - cutting the maximizer trim .5 db and adding an exciter…

Logic did not fare well when compared to the Weiss or Ozone - just not as good IMHO (I was the logic fan boy when it came out)

Would like to try the Weiss exciter - not purchased - yet

Softube needs a learn function like ozone and logic for the initial eq - talked with them - they don’t seem receptive - or they talk about other features - they could be working on it…

I can’t trust the Weiss master on other platforms - without testing them - just not sure enough of the final product…

Overall Today June 8, 2025
1) Ozone came out first - although not as clean - the mixes translate well to other platforms
2) Softube Flow - Weiss came in a close second
3) Logic Mastering Assistant came out in a far third

What have you found in your testing of Mastering Software?

Now that I’m done lol and reading what I wrote… perhaps some hybrid of Ozone and Softube would be the best… just turn off the Ozone Modules and use the super clean Weiss….

Well - just got the extra 15% off code from Softube so I upgraded Weiss Collection 2 with the Weiss exciter…

Now I really want to try the hybrid…. So finished Sunday dinner - back in

So the Weiss exciter is amazing….

Something about the cleanliness of the Weiss through the entire frequency- that keeps pulling me back - Ozone is no slouch - just the Weiss is better…

For me playing with the hybrid is pretty amazing
May have to save this… and start using a few of the separate ozone 11 plugins…

In my rare use of OZONE Assistant ...

When we get an EQ module setting ... I always transfer those settings to [usually] the Massenburg MDWeQ, through visual curve matching with Bertom analyzer.

If you didn't A/B compare, one might think the Ozone eq is just fine [and for the most part, yeah], but it is no match for the MDWeQ ... or the Weiss MP. Now the Linear Phase Weiss is a different matter, and that is ... do you want LP for this particular job ... sometimes yes, other times a different choice.

They'll each sound better than the Ozone eq .... now, one option is to run the OZ-eq 2x or 4x oversampled [if running at 44.1]. That does improve the 'clarity' ... still, the MDWeQ is tough to beat.

From what I can find… the exciter has oversampling

That's native in Reaper.

There are also plugin hosts [like metaplugin] that can do oversampling.

Why don’t more companies or devs have over sampling? In some cases - yes - you want the noise - but perhaps ad it as an option?

As a Self Confessed plugin hoarder - I’ve selectively try to load only plugins that I will use…

Still quite a few…

They been around for some time.

Probably more 'famous' for their PluginDoctor.

As for initial Plugin scanning ... it is slow.

The WAVES plugs are in a 'Shell' [native].

There use to be a way to extract the WAVES plugin from the 'shell' into separate plugins ... that was a long time back, and maybe no longer possible [idn].

Metaplug [and its' new sibling] are like a patchbay for plugins. You can build some unique signal flows.

I don't tend to use it often ... but there are times.

Ok only Izotope and fab came through for me…

Well hard to tell in my system what is Weiss or Ozone with 8x oversampling…

Ozone sounds MUCH cleaner now… haven’t tried an offline bounce - just real time OS

Then end in the ozone maximizer…

Don’t know…. Kind of wish the maximizer could be oversampled…

yeah ... the OS definitely helps many of the OZONE moduals ... especially the EQ.

I'm careful picking OS rates [in general] ... sometimes higher is only different, not necessarily better.

As for 'Hosts' that oversample ... I think another one might be BlueCats Audio 'Patchwork' ... double check that.

Again, it can be handy for things like parallel processing, or selectable, unique chains ... doesn't have the routing capabilities like
MetaPlug .... but it's own special use/workflow.

Still, all this 'extra' processing details I talk of are issues dealt in Mastering. We can be very small detail oriented.

Mixing is a different aspect [still important], but the tolerances of different processors can be much wider, and in the Tracking/ Mixing world, no one will be able to identify that the EQ was oversampled at 4x or 8x [or not].

Nonetheless ... it all adds up .... and if it sounds better? then we go from there.

Gave me a detailed 2.9 Meg file..

I couldn’t see how to load into another eq - like the Weiss ….

Tried 64x OverSamping off line bounce - it does sound good - but took a few minutes of computer time….

I was used to taking a sip of Coffee and the bounce for a three minute pop song would be done!!!

If you're speaking of the Bertom Analyzer ?!?

It comes as a plugin [VST3] I use.

Basically, you 'bookend' the plugin you want to analyze in your chain:

BA
plugin to monitor
BA

The first BA generates a special noise/tone that feeds [SENDS] into the test plugin.

Test plugin.

Followed by a 2nd instance of BA that then becomes the Receiver that displays the analysis.

The 2nd BA usually automatically switches to Receiver mode [you can manually change].

The only setting to make, turn ON PHASE, then hit SUGGEST, and it calculate the PDC Delay.

To compare 2 different plugins ... just 'bookend' each plugin ... then

In the 'last' RECEIVE BA, there is an OVERLAY function that will layer a dual display.

You can also adjust the dB scaling [down to 2dB] for more accuracy.

From there, you can adjust one EQ to 'match' another.

This is a different procedure than Plugin Doc [as a plugin or stand alone] which you load in 2 plugins and view the overlay.

I use both systems ... but use Bertom inside the DAW to match [or view] plugin settings.

Each have their use and function/workflow.

Heck ... they don't even use a 'single standard' Q function.
Some use the Quality Factor [Q] while others use Bandwidth ... still called 'Q'.

In fact, the Ozone uses a different Q calculation for the SHELVES, than what they use on the Bell bands. [in my findings].

Actually, there are several other 'variables' among EQ's that would make 'direct' translation approximate ... at best.
Things like Proportional EQ would affect differently to more 'standard' eq's.

It's crazy everywhere ...

A standard 'Cup' is measured at 5oz ... unless you are talking a cup of Coffee or Tea ... then a 'cup' is 8oz.
[from my research, apparently the 'Tea toddlers' adopted the 8oz as a 'cup' ... Coffee went along

Not a problem, till you try to measure HOW many Grams to make a good cup of Coffee.

They don't seem to teach these important things in School anymore ...

Anyway .... probably none of this helped ... but I said it nonetheless

Well… happy accident?

Did all the work setting up the modules in Metaplugin…

Next day ‘mastered’ a new song with the new chain

Released it

Thought, boy it is loud -8.5 lufs

Went on… listened to it over and over…

For some reason opened it and looked at the individual modules - they were not what I set it too… mostly default settings for each and narrow for imager

Oh no - released - and not what I wanted…

Well - we’ll have to fix that - rolled up my sleeves and got to work…

Listened intently - reset each module - created new presets… spent a lot of time here…

Put in waves loudness meters to check my gain structure - ended up with a modern, wider mix at -14 lufs

I’ll be dammed - don’t like it as much as the first happy accident…

Don’t know if I got used to the happy accident sound? Or what…

Has this happened to you? Like an original master? But chased a different sound?
