The Takstar CM-60 ($30 on Amazon)has been mentioned over at Low End Theory, but the next model up, the CM-63 ($40 on Amazon), is I think worthy of a mention over here - if only for 'hazardous, or high risk duty'.
Tests over at Group DIY have shown that the culprit for the unpleasant top end of the CM-60 was the deep recess of the diaphragm, placing a significant ring in front of it.
The CM-
63 capsules are of the same internal construction, but have a much better designed grille and have the diaphragm recessed not nearly as much; closer to that of higher quality mics. Plus, the electronics in the CM-63 are much better, with improved RF filtering, and (for those so technically inclined) a trimmer pot on the board to optimize the biasing of the FET.
There will be some who find the mic not quiet enough for their purposes, but the self noise has not been an issue for me.
The backplate of the CM-60/63 capsules is of the same design as the Rode TF-5, but they don't have the honeycomb plate in front of the diaphragm like the Rodes; the honeycomb plate apparently makes them a bit less directional in the top octave.
The mics are of much better/more solid construction than Behringer B-5, for example; solid brass.
A test over at Group DIY showed these capsule to function beautifully as omnis when the capsule's actual rear plate vents were sealed up (NOT just taping over the slots in the mic body!). Graph shown is measured 0/90/180 response of this omni mod to a CM-60 capsule (with grille removed) in an APE (poster was working on a DIY M 50-style mic; the bump at the bottom is an artifact of his measuring setup).
I got a pair of surprisingly good omni capsules for CM-63s by doing this mod to a pair of CM-60 capsules, removing their front grilles (while also making the recess much shallower) and trimming off a bit of the edge of the mesh discs so they could be put back in. The better front grille construction of the CM-63 capsules likely doesn't require this surgery.

I'm actually preferring this omni conversion over my Oktava MK-012 omnis on a lot of things.

I wont be responding to any posts about "this doesn't work", "it isn't this simple", "card and omni diaphragm tensions are different", etc., etc. Done as described, works and sounds great. Could very well be that it doesn't work with capsules of a different design, but this one has been tested and measured.
