Anyone good coments on the dbx162SL new purple version vs. 160VU Is this stuff so really cheaply made? I'm hear only from the 160VU and nothing about this newly version.

my understanding is the 162SL is a cheeper version of the 160SL. a few people around here have 160SLs im surprised more dont. its a bit of a defferent beast from the origional 160VU, not compleatly different but not the same.

the blue series certainly isnt made cheep, i dont think any expence is spared. as for just how different the 160SL and 162SL are i dont know, i havnt been able to get much info on it.

Anyone use the purpleface?

The SL versions add AutoVelocity which changes the attack and release somewhat.
as far as i know the the audio path is the same its just the control that differs
there was an upgrade you could add to the non SL version and you the switch AutoVelocity off internally if you want to keep the original attack and release.

This is an old thread i was focused 2month on it. At this time (more than a year) the future lead me in a other direction.

We have both in our studios (blackface and purpleface 162), but I've never actually a/b:t them for some reason. I've meant to do it many times, but other unit has always been in different control room and someone else was using it when I had got the time to expriment with these two units...

I have to check it out, maybe post some clips... when I have time for it.

The 160SL has higher headroom, balanced XLR's for all i/o, upgraded internal components and is overall a better unit than the 162SL. This is not to say the 162SL isn't good. It's great. The 160SL is just taking it to an entirely new level of amazing. I've got two of these and am about to buy a 3rd.

We've got a pretty detailed spec chart on our website on both product pages. See for yourself and compare/contrast. Both are amazing like I said, but if you want the best the 160SL is where its at.

well thats good to hear, but its the same as every other sales pitch and what i can read on the dbx website. the published specs dont tell all that much either, the specs of the 162 are not as complete as the 160 so direct comparisons of most features cant be made and some of the specs of the 160SL are just wrong so im less inclined to believe all the others anyway (it was probably just a typo but everyone who list it reproduces the same mistake(s). regardless specs dont tell you how a unit sounds which is much more important than how it performs on the bench. i can live with only 118db dynamic range the question is whats the difference in the sound.

I have the same confusion. the write-up on the 162SL talks about: "Like it's big brother the 162SL, it takes full advantage of the best parts available and dbx's advanced manufacturing, including Jensen® transformers on each output standard."

How can a unit be described as its own big brother? I'd hate to see the rest of that famly.

Note that the 160SL talks about optional the 704X digital card, whereas the 162SL does not.

Well, I've used the Blueface once or twice and indeed its a great comp but to me it is unnecessarily expensive and almost never seen in the second-hand market. Btw, what did the Blackface sell for in 1975, anyone remember?

Kittonian mentionned using the Blueface on the 2buss surprise thread, could the Purpleface work for that duty as well? And yes I'll admit it, I like the color... Funky.
