If so what do you like about it? and how do you us it.

The only time I have patched up the 165A at the studio in the last 7 years has been for the peakstop, because it is a nice line level distortion box with the peakstop blazing away. I maybe, maybe, but not usually, would compress something through it. IN parallell.... with the peakstop. Wanna buy one?

Snare, bass, acoustics or vocs. Great piece for that DBX vca compression. I hate the peak stop and never use it. I have 1 165A and 2 165s. Get used on every mix.

It's my go-to compressor for direct bass; something about its hairy gushiness makes the DI blend with the mic'd amp effortlessly. I'm also using it alot as a parallel compressor on bass during mixdown. Nice for vocals also where I want some cornstarch without too much attitude.

The version w/o the peakstop limiter sounds a little clearer to my ears but I have a 165A and use it on snare, kick, bass and some vocals. A much more flexible compressor for the money than its older brother, the 160VU.

Who ever designed that "peak stop" circuit should be drawn and quartered at high noon on a rainy day... makes an Alesis 3630 sound like a Crane Song in comparison.

However, if you're into compressing sends to reverb units... the DBX-165A is actually one of my favorite units for that particular job... I've been using a channel of SPL "Transient Designer" for those tasks lately but the 165A was indeed a useful tool in that application.

Yeah....I couldn't agree more about the peakstop circutry. I remember using that feature on various DBX units and being completely amazed that anyone would release a piece of gear with a circut that sounded that bad. Who on earth put the stamp of approval on that? It went into distortion with the first HINT of hitting the peakstop threshold.

I find the 165a loves drums.. The auto times on attack and release make it effortless too.
I like it on individual close mic channels, but more so on something that gets the whole kit. Like a room mic, or a glue mic, or a buss that's combined channels.

lots of compressors make drums big, but the 165a seems to make them smaller and tighter. Good times.

Like most above in this thread, the peakstop limiter never gets used. I have been meaning to try removing the peakstop from the circuit, it's just lifting a diode or 2 I believe. Turns it into a 165 sans 'a'. Curious to hear the difference..

I love the DBX 165a, especially on acoustics and backing vox - sometimes bass.

I remember reading years ago that Brendan O'brien used one recording Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Can't remember where I read it or what he might have used it for though. That is the extend of my use.

Put it on manual attack release, quickest attack and dail in the release from quickest to slower, depending on how much hair you want. Then top that with the peakstop! Don't understand why peopel hate it, I compleatly love it! The distortion is some what like a tape/sansamp hybrid, perfect for that 70's tamburins and other percussions!

Really nice on bass. A lot of character

Why use a 165 when I have a Lafont LP-23 telephone simulator that can do even order harmonics when the 165 will never do that and it's distortion is gross sounding to the ear compared to the Lafont.
