Would you mind to elaborate a little bit more on this issue? For example, I wonder, if I just use my two healthy hands to simultaneously adjust attack (or release or threshold) on two unlinked units would it make any difference if I use only one hand on the master and the slave (when linked) would be adjusted automatically (except that one hand is busy and the other hand would have a rest)? Any audible difference? Thanks in advance! Peace, Oliver
Sorry, hadn't seen this post until just now.
I like to use pairs of compressors unlinked, so that the stereo material can "waiver" between the left and right sides. This all depends on the music. This to my ear with "unlinked" boxes, has a very natural sound and I prefer it most often to the dead locked L/R clamping.
Linking compressors will make each side of the compressor work evenly, even though the sides may not warrant that, so what you get is very centered/glued program material. This may be a goal, maybe not you have to just try it out on the material. It's all up to your preference and how you like to work with the mix and material. Both techniques are nice, but like I said I like un-linked boxes for the most part.
