This is almost a complete description of Akai MPC live. If only they didn't screw it so badly with midi, and with some other little things.

Unfortunately none of them have the Launchpad-style grid controller (with scenes), which I reckon is the most important aspect of my dream machine
While we're dreaming, I reckon three products;
1) the "core" unit - self-container Session View machine (with just grid, scene and transport buttons)
2) the "mixer" unit, with faders (led touch strips?), mute/solo buttons, send encoders
3) The "controller" unit - basically a grid of encoders than can be mapped to anything, if you need any further control.
So 2 and 3 are just "dumb" generic midi controllers. You could just buy what you need and chain them together. All would have the same physical footprint (squareish, Launchpad style) so could sit beside each other seamlessly. Maybe they'd even lock together with some kind of catch mechanism.
