I ended up using midiox. Some of the synth now works but not all of it.

My bad eyesight - I've always looked at it and thought it was a sine wave.
That said I always wished the 101 had the LFO Fade time feature of the MC-202 but I digress.

Yeah, well, had to check it myself before i was completely sure so..

Never knew! Quite a strange feature actually since a 202 is mostly played with the sequencer but also because of the space constraints...

What i personally whished for on a 101 is a pressure sensitive Mod knob on the bender. Now it's just on/off but would have been great if it was variable.

Nothing beats retro games, AMIGA, C64, NES, SNES. I enjoy those games more than any new game. MAME and NEOGEO ohhh

Atari 2600 ESB is probably one of the 5 greatest Star Wars games ever made. I'd put it up there with Tie Fighter, KotOR II, the original arcade game from 83, and Jedi Outcast. It perfectly captures the hopelessness of that scene from the movie.

As with any analog monosynth, there is definitely potential for mods, but I don't think the MS-101 has found its way into the hands of enough crazy people yet.

Tracing the circuits on boards with tiny components (to determine where to apply mods) can be more time-consuming than vintage through-hole circuit boards, but actually doing the mods isn't too difficult if you have the skill / experience. But it's definitely easier to ruin your synth if you don't know what you're doing.

DavyP, your demos sound fun but they do not sound like vintage SH101 music to me. Is it possible to make the new MS101 sound more like a SH101 or is it a thing of its own?

I appreciate the fact that MS101 is a great little synth with plenty of character - this has already been established. But is it the SH101 character? Where is the demo that shows that?

I'd be more than happy to recreate the SH101 character if I knew what that was! As I said I haven't owned the original and bought it to do "my thing" with. I don't think its an excuse, it's how I role with my synths. It's a basic mono synth and all those sounds in the demo where basic sounds, to be honest i would find it dull recreating them I'd rather do something fun and original.

Now stop sucking me into this debate. Tomorrow I'll post something fun sequencing the 101 with the Pioneer Squid and I'll try and include some of those "classic" sounds. Youtube would be a boring place for videos though if everyone just wanted a certain type of sound.

You could do those "classic sounds" on any mono synth, the Treadstone for Example:

I'd happily oblige if I could get hold of a MS for a few days to a week and just do a few audio demo's but alas that is not going to happen. it would be great way to decide if I wanted one too. If Uli wants to make me a convert here's his chance.

Of course, you're doing your own thing, having great fun and it shows in the demos you posted. Nothing wrong with that and there's nothing wrong with your demos.

What I and some other members are talking about has nothing to do with that. It is the strange impression that while MS101 sounds incredibly similar to the original when playing certain sounds, there is another part of the SH101's palette, quite important as well, that seems to elude the MS101 - hence the SH101 videos for reference.

We are talking here $300.... How big of a risk would you be taking ?

$599 + Tax in Canada = $676.00 (roughly) at which point the DM12D is the better option feature wise.
$300 would be considerably less risk I'd agree but that's getting into BS2 territory here price wise this end and the BS2 wins out on feature set by a country mile and can just as easily sound very 101 like.
I have to say though, the black/grey model looks fantastic.

I’ve just been comparing this, I’ve copied 7 of the patches from this SH101 video, excluding the arpeg patch right at the start... the 7 sounds following this with similar notation, I’ll try and get a sound file up so you can hear / judge for yourselves.

Well i would gladly go buy one this instant and test it out for myself, and upload audio examples for everyone else to hear, then simply return it if it fails the acid test. But unfortunately it will take many months to get one in my hands. I guess that's why people are pestering the existing owners to do demos to prove to us whether or not the MS-101 successfully nailed the filter, despite they fact they have no obligation whatsoever to do so

you shouldn't take it too personal if people are asking for classic sounds from a clone of a classic synth. For some people who are interested in a clone it simply does matter how close it comes to the original, this has nothing to do with talking the effort down from people posting demos which don't reflect the sound which the original is known for. your demos are nice and give a good overview what the ms101 is capable of, so all fine
